As Autodesk makes changes yet again to its licensing policies, the CAD world is about to see yet another class of AutoCAD licenses disappear from the users choice.
There is an excellent Cadalyst blog post by Robert Green that explains this in detail so I will just post a summary here.
Autodesk is retiring network licenses and replacing them with named subscriptions. To make it look attractive, the offer is captioned: "Get 2-for-1 exchange: Trade your (one) existing license for (two) named subscriptions". By this stroke of the rule, Autodesk now wants you to declare in advance who the users are, name them, register them and have them use the license after their credentials are entered and logged. There are hidden gotchas in this move. For small companies, this may not seem like a big deal but for large companies, this is a CAD Administrator's nightmare and a highly restrictive procedure - if you are forced to think in terms of named users all the time.
