The keynote speaker of the event, Mr. Gautam Samant, MD of Spica Hudraulics is a die-hard supporter of open source software. In his presentation titled "Interoperability and why it matters", he explained some of the key challenges of the CAD user community.
Focussing specifically on data management, he looked at the concerns of the CAD operator vis-a-vis the business owner. The main challenge for CAD business owners is data interoperability, scalability and ownership.
Interoperability:
the capability of different programs to exchange data via a common set of exchange formats, to read and write the same file formats, and to use the same protocols.
"The main intellectual property your business creates is the data. If it is proprietary and dependent on a particular vendor or company, it does not give me a good feeling." said Mr. Gautam Samant. "Open source technologies helps me overcome this limitation".
Mr. Samant went to explain more about proprietary and open data formats, where they come from and how they have evolved.
He showed us some very interesting slides about proprietary formats that became open formats with time (examples jpg, iges etc).
Next, he talked about Post facto interoperability, which is interoperability within a community of vendors. The Open Design Alliance is the best example of this.
"Times are changing", says Mr. Samant, "Governments, universities and schools have pro-actively adapted open standards and pushing hard for it".
"Even the short-lived Kejirwal government in Delhi talked about and promoted free software"
Why use Open Source?
"Practice what you preach" said Mr. Samant. His entire presentation was made using Libre Office and shown using Linux.
