While using GeoTools under Bricscad, we have often been told by users that Bricscad freezes while performing huge processing operations. For example, if you try to read in a file containing 20000+ lines of text or try to convert 5000+ polylines in one go, after a while, you will see the Vista/XP hourglass, the GeoTools status display does not update the count anymore and it appears thar your Bricscad application has completely frozen.
Your initial reaction may be to bring up the Windows Task Manager and kill the task. This is natural. But, the reality is that this is a BRICSCAD QUIRK which prevents the status message from displaying after a while and the appearance of the Windows hourglass is a completely misleading behavior. The reality is that Bricscad has not frozen and is active, alive, kicking and working in the background. All you have to do it to patiently wait. I can assure you that after GeoTools finishes its task, Bricscad will automatically return to the command prompt. It may take a few minutes to a few hours but it surely will finish and return to the command line. Until then, there is no way to know what is happening, but the good news is that your process is still running and working hard to finish and bring you the desired result.
While Bricsys engineers are trying to fix why the status message goes blank or stops updating in the text window, and the hourglass appears, we, on our part, will provide an alternative method of reporting the progress to GeoTools users so that they will not be in the dark about what is happening. One method we have tested is to write a simple text file in some location (like the root folder of the drive where the current drawing resides) and this text file can tell you which entity or line number is being processed and how many more to go before the finish line appears. Periodically keeping tabs of this text file is probably more informative that staring at the Windows hourglass.
