One of the first questions AutoCAD users ask after the initial round of testing and evaluation in Bricscad is if the FILTER command of AutoCAD is available. Unfortunately, there wasn't one available for Bricscad until yesterday. I am pleased to announce today that there is now a complete and identical implementation of the FILTER command right here in Bricscad using GeoTools.
As part of one of the transition helper tools that we are putting up to make your A2B (AutoCAD to Bricscad) journey easier, the GT_FILTER command is one of them. It looks like this in GeoTools for Bricscad.
Now, for those of you who are new to this topic or simply want to learn more, here is some additional reading. Bricscad provides a slightly different route by which you can do filtering of DWG objects. You have to first get to the properties window and then click on the filter icon which will allow you to toggle between properties view and QuickSelect-kind of user-interface.
So, there has been no QSELECT or FILTER kind of command that you ould type off the command line and get going. As I said, the QSELECT is available in Bricscad but somewhat embedded and accessed from the Properties window. Before I go ahead to tell you what we are going to do about it, let us take a quick look at what these two commands do. Both are object selection tools that help build selection sets based on a filter criteria. One of the main differences and an edge for the FILTER command is that it has a compact dialog box and allows you to build logical AND /OR statements while defining your criteria.
Both are powerful selection methods, but it appears to me that the FILTER command has been the more popular and addictive of the two, going by the persistent demands of what Bricscad users are asking and I have seen them use the same in AutoCAD.
To fill this need, we have decided to bring the best of both worlds under one roof - the FILTER command in Bricscad. Starting today, you can use the FILTER command in Bricscad in our GeoTools product. The user interface of the GT_FILTER in GeoTools-Bricscad closely mimics the existing familiar FILTER command of AutoCAD to help you make the transition easier.
Last but not the least, I would like to draw your attention to yet another old and powerful object selection tool in GeoTools - GT_MAKESEL. So, with GT_FILTER, QSELECT and GT_MAKESEL, you will not be short of options and possibiltiies to fish out data from your drawing.
This is just one of the 250-odd small miracles you can perform in Bricscad with a small add-on called GeoTools. And all put together, this represents one giant leap in using CAD to a much higher level of productivity.
